Death Wish 1.4 in development.

Hey everybody! It's been a while so I thought I'd drop a note that I am working on the 1.4 update to Death Wish. Changes include adjustments in health availability (turning the overall difficulty down a bit — no one likes quicksaving every 2 minutes), some compatibility issues for multiplayer, and few other goodies I'll reveal in the future.

Stay tuned!

  1. That's weird... I've never gotten a tile error there before (usually the fire pods did it in that level before version 1.3).

Do you have any other mods installed for Blood that might be messing with the tiles?

There's no funny stuff going on in that area (moving sectors, bobbing floors, etc) so I'm not sure what else it could be. Also try restarting the level if nothing else works, as that could help. Let me know if it doesn't :-)

  2. Oops, my bad. I managed to fix it this morning. It turns out when I installed another Blood mod off ModDB.com, called, "New Alone In the Dark," it replaced some tile files that Death Wish apparently did not like. Anyway, I got rid of "Alone In the Dark" and put the old Blood files back from a back-up flash drive. It works fine now :)

With that said, fantastic job man, and I hope you plan on making more mods like this and on other classic games like that in the future!!!

  3. I hope you don't mind if I go a bit off off topic a little bit; but if you haven't heard, there is a reboot coming out this Fall for Shadow Warrior, starring Lo Wang as he fights off against Lord Zilla's forces. It is a game somewhat similar to the Blood franchise itself. I believe that it is coming out for the PC and PlayStation 4. You should look it up if you get a chance. A very good game, I might add. You can actually play the original Shadow Warrior off Steam for free. If you haven't heard or played it yet, I suggest that you look it up and try it out. You won't be disappointed...

And, yeah, I changed my user name and avatar Icon a bit from my very first post on this page; it seemed to fit better, or at least in my opinion. Anyway, have great afternoon :)

  4. Yeah, I've seen some video of it. I'm hoping Atari sells off it's IPs and someone buys up Blood, subsequently releasing the source code so people can mod it like Doom. I bet we'd get a lot more mappers if that happened.

    In the future:
Death Wish 1.4 is me going level by level and nerfing the difficulty a bit while tuning up old areas and adding some new ones. I also started reworking the old Hostile Takeover mod I made when I was a teenager, getting the levels up to Death Wish quality (which unfortunately means throwing a few levels out entirely), but a lot of things got put on hold so I could get work done on some of my indie games.

    1. Amen to that, brother. I'm hoping that Monolith Productions, the company that made Blood, acquires it down the road. It seems that the founder of Monolith, Jason "Jace" Hall, wanted to give the Blood franchise a second chance at life (similar to what is happening to "Shadow Warrior"), but Atari refused, saying they were uninterested. I hope that he buys it back from Atari, seeing as they don't know how to treat classic games well if it bit them in @$$...

I actually heard that someone does have the source code (excluding Jason Hall), but refuses to release it, saying he fears legal action if he did :(

May I ask what "Hostile Takeover" is? It sounds familiar, but I haven't got a clue about what it's for. Could you tell me more about it... ?

    2. Hostile Takeover is another addon I did a loooong time ago. It's okay but Death Wish puts it to shame. You're better off waiting for the updated version. I'll post about it here when the time comes.

    3. That's great to hear. Exactly what specific game is the mod for, if I might ask?

And, yes, I learned my lesson not to mess with the Death Wish's "dosboxBloodDW.conf" file anymore. I will keep it at 64 mg, exactly as you had written it in.

I set my official DOSBox 0.74 Engine to run on 100mg; I hope this sets things straight, and so far, it has :)

    4. It's another Blood mod.

I made the Blood mods Inherit the Earth and Hostile Takeover when I first started using Mapedit over 10 years ago, so they aren't anywhere as good as Death Wish. They have bad lighting, nearly no health, confusing level design (with tedious backtracking), etc. They were basically collections of levels I had sitting around my directory thrown together into addons. Hostile had a few levels worth reworking so I'm looking into that, but they are otherwise lackluster. People who play Death Wish and look up other stuff I've made expecting the same quality will be disappointed :-)

    5. As Cartman would say on South Park, "SHWEEET!"

Is it going to be a sequel to "Death Wish," a prequel for "Blood," a stand-alone Blood-type game, or... or what?

    6. If anything it would take place after Death Wish, but I certainly can't call it Death Wish 2 or people will expect another 30 level bonanza :-)

    7. Great to hear! So, do you have any ideas on who the main baddie is going to be in "Hostile Takeover"? Furthermore, what will the story revolve around, if you don't mind me by asking, Bloatoid?

    8. After going through Hostile Takeover recently, I decided to just give it an update:

      http://blood.freeminded.de/index.php?section=maps&id=452

It's not Death Wish quality, but if you haven't played it before then now's a good time!

The levels worth refurbishing will be reworked and added to something new rather than a remake in the future (I'm busy making some indie games right now). I haven't decided whether I should package it with Death Wish or make it a separate download.

    9. Hey, thanks! "Indie games?" Hmm, that sounds sort of familiar; mind telling me what it is, if I might ask?

    10. We haven't released anything as of yet, but our website is here:

      http://ghostcrabgames.com/

Nothing there will be Blood related, though.

    11. Thanks, man ;)

I noticed one of your first games that you and your friend, Chris Hoopes, are working on is a shooter game called "Drive To Hell." Any chance that you'll make it available for the PC? I don't mind you making it for IOS and Android, but they're sort of expensive, and I haven't been able to purchase one yet; so, I thought I would ask if you'd make it available for computer players, as well...

  5. Oh, Bloatoid, there's just one thing I wanted to point out. It's probably nothing -- it happened a few days ago, and it only occurred just once -- but on the secret level of Episode 1, "In Cold Blood," called "Spooky World," when I managed to get to the controlled ship to take me across the water, the game crashed. I then got an error saying "ERROR (499) src\db.cpp" I don't think it means anything, and it might of happened because I changed how much memsize "Death Wish" could use in its own "dosboxBloodDW.conf" file (I changed the memzise from 64 to 100, something that, once again, it [the game] or the DOSBox engine didn't like). Anyhow, I changed it back, and it works just fine; but, just in case it IS a bug, I thought I should let you know just in case if anyone else is having problems with it, okay?

With that said, have a great afternoon and best of luck with your future projects. Good job :)

    1. When I first started using DOSBOX, I had it set to 128MB RAM — the more the better right?! Nope, it breaks stuff :-/

I always have mine set at 32 or 64 and haven't gotten that error yet.

  6. Yeah, I apologize about that. I had some early problems getting the cut scenes in Blood to work. It turned out when first starting the DOSBox system, it was automatically set to run 16 mg; this wasn't enough, as the Blood game required at least 36mg; so, I set the main DOSBox Engine to 100; haven't had any problems since, other than DW crashing (which I found out was that the other mod I installed replaced some tile files). Anyway, I fixed all of it; just thought I should let you know, that all...

  7. Time for an epic bump! :P Are you still working on this? Would be nice if that update with more health items was still released, even if it's three years since your last update on the website.

    1. I'm not actively working on it at the moment, as I am involved in some other projects and need time to finish up the 1.4 version's movies. It'll be out sometime next year when I'm between projects and have some free time to wrap it up.

    2. Hey Bloatoid, could you please help me get your mod to work with One Unit Whole Blood Steam GOG Patch v1.1 FULL? It makes Blood prettier and smoother.

      It can be found here:
      http://www.moddb.com/games/blood/downloads/one-unit-whole-blood-steam-gog-patch-full

I've been trying for days but I was never able to get the audio and the correct resolution to work optimally with your mod at the same time. Hopefully, 1.4 will boast a streamlined installation.

    3. Installers cause a lot of problems that I'd like to avoid. What doesn't work, exactly? I've never used anything other than DOSBox to launch the game.

  8. Hey man, I just finished Death Wish in two sittings.
I've been a fan of Doom for a very long time and even released a mapset. And I dived in and out of all classic Build games. What I can say is that even for an engine as straightforward and user-friendly as Doom, making great maps is fookin hard. I simply am shocked and at a loss for words. That you were able to produce a goddamn 3 episode mapset that not only easily surpasses the original game, but also obliterates any third-party add-on for a classic FPS, all in less than two years, is an accomplishment I simply cannot wrap my head around. And on an engine that received no support or proper editing tools, no less. Holy fuckin shit man. You rock. Amazing.

    1. Thanks for the kind words! I would have answered this email sooner but apparently my gmail forwarding function from this account hasn't been working properly.

My friend got me to play Duke3D when I came out and I've been editing with the Build engine since then (I've never been good at Doom for some reason, even though I love Doom 2). I played through regular Blood a few times and picked apart the original levels in Mapedit before I started any of the Death Wish levels, which I think helped a lot (and I was a lot older). I also watched someone play through the maps (rather than just getting written feedback) so I could see what parts were surprising or where they'd get stuck. A lot of people don't like the sci-fi levels as much since they get a bit away from the original game theme but I figured if you wanted all castles and dungeons there were plenty of those out there on map sites to be found and I love sci-fi horror. It helps when the theme is interesting to the creator since so many hours get poured into every map.
